I was following this instruction for installing R 4.0 in Ubuntu 18.04
$ sudo apt remove r-base $ sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys E298A3A825C0D65DFD57CBB651716619E084DAB9 $ sudo add-apt-repository 'deb bionic-cran40/' $ sudo apt update $ sudo apt install r-base However I get this error message:

This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source However the following packages replace it: r-base-core r-doc-info r-doc-html r-base-html r-base-core:i386 E: Package 'r-base' has no installation candidate I'm using this version of Ubuntu:

Following suggestion by @user.dz, I ended up manually editing /etc/apt/preferences and replacing pin priority from -1 to 500

$ sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys E298A3A825C0D65DFD57CBB651716619E084DAB9 Warning: apt-key is deprecated. When you run apt-key the keyserver is deprecated on /tmp/ like my case. The Ubuntu archives on CRAN are signed with the key of Michael Rutter with key ID 0x51716619e084dab9. To add the key to your system with one command use

$ wget -qO- | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/cran_ubuntu_key.asc $ sudo add-apt-repository "deb $(lsb_release -cs)-cran40/" $ sudo apt update $ sudo apt install --no-install-recommends r-base Hope this helps.
